Patrick Cushing

Successes are truly rewarding when you overcome obstacles.

Patrick was born June 19th, 1987 in Amsterdam, NY to Kevin and Cindy Cushing; his older brother Justin and younger sister Hannah.

From a young age, Pat struggled through speech therapy. Tubes in his ears slowed his ability to speak, eventually turning into a slight stutter and a voice uniquely his.

He showed an energy that doctors described as hyperactivity and family just described as “Pat.” Sitting still was not a possibility. This energy can explain that despite affectionately being called “carboman” by his mother for all the breads, cereals, and other carbs he ate, he remained undersized.

Pat took a liking to sports at a young age. Despite his smaller size he would make travel baseball and basketball teams. He played quarterback in the Little Giants football league.

Needing more constant activity in his sports, Pat transitioned to skateboarding. As his skills on the skateboard grew, so did his social skills. His confidence and circle of friends grew. His smaller frame and constant energy became an asset. His family noticed he no longer seemed frustrated with his stuttering and instead referred to it as his “accent.”

The skateboarding scene helped develop and influence Pat’s love for music. He traveled to shows with friends and family. He collected CDs and merchandise from his favorite bands. He was known for his #lyricfriday social media posts with lyrics from obscure bands.

Pat also enjoyed playing video games. His friends are quick to admit he was always one of the best at any game he took on. Everyone wanted Pat to be on their team.

After attending Amsterdam High School and Fulton Montgomery Community College, Pat had matured into a confident young man. He developed an ability to make friends with anybody. He would seek out the self conscious person in groups and ensure he made them feel comfortable. He had a true affinity for helping that stemmed from strong emotional empathy towards others.

He worked his way into an IT career with the NYS Senate. He loved the work, and they loved him back. His positive attitude was immediately apparent whenever he had the opportunity to assist.

With his newfound confidence, Pat got back into sports. He stood out in local dodgeball leagues, catching the eyes of other longtime competitors. He joined teams playing in competitions all over the world, culminating in playing for team USA at the World Cup of Dodgeball at Madison Square Garden. His falling backwards grab for the last out is called “the catch” by his friends and family.

Pat also excelled at softball where his quick reactions and strong arm pushed him as a top third baseman in the area. As he drew attention for making plays no one else could make, he used that attention to make friends on both his team and the competitors. Undersized no more.

Pat found love with Amanda Halse, sharing an affinity for music, shows, and video games. She would expand Pat’s palate in food, art, and bands. They lived together in Troy, NY, planning their future together. They passed away together, living their lives the way they enjoyed; with friends. and together.
